A Forager's Life

A Forager’s Life Dan goes foraging!...Jay Marion is a master forager who lives in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. One chef says, “Jay can consistently find world-class ingredients just by going for a walk in the woods.” This week, Dan joins Jay for one of those walks, and hears the story of how his business got to where it is today. Jay Marion had the foraging knowledge he got from his grandparents, and the business sense to get in early on a growing trend. My Food History Wasn't Lost. It was Stolen.

EPoet Tommy Pico tells the story of building his own indigenous food history from scratch... A few years ago, Tommy Pico, a queer indigenous American poet, and lover of junk food, set out to learn how to cook. But rather than turn to the past to find an indigenous food history, he turned to friends to build his own. His new book FEED, an epic poem, chronicles that journey. Tommy and Dan chat about the horrors of airport vegetarian options, what it’s like when the food you grow up with is connected to trauma, and how queerness and looking to the future creates an opportunity to make your own legacy. 2 | When Black Chefs Created Plantation Food

We visit one of America’s most famous plantations with three descendants of enslaved Virginians... In 1784, Thomas Jefferson brought the enslaved chef James Hemings, brother of Sally Hemings, with him to France, to train under the French culinary masters of the day. Hemings used what he learned to create a cuisine that was half French, half Virginian, and brought it back to Jefferson's plantation, Monticello. French fries. Ice cream. Mac and cheese. Meringue. All of these foods came to America through the kitchens at Monticello. This week, Dan tours those kitchens with three descendants of enslaved Virginians, including Michael Twitty, culinary historian and author of The Cooking Gene. Today's sponsors: Go toLarabar.comto explore all the fun flavors. Go toNewMexico.org to plan your trip. Go toRothys.com/sporkful to get your new favorite flats.
