Podcast #294 – Team Ordinary Spotlight: Steffanie Melinda Brown, Ordinary Marathon Update & a New Commitment to Training and Diet

On today’s podcast we congratulate all of our #TeamOrdinary members who PR’d Half-Marathons this weekend! One of whom, Steffanie Melinda Brown, finished her very first half-marathon! Outstanding achievement, Steffanie! I’ll read Steffanie’s athlete profile from the TeamOrdinary.com website so you can see why this was such a wonderful achievement for her. We will be looking to do more Team Ordinary athlete spotlight segments in the future! Planning for the 2020 Ordinary Marathon is underway! Stefany and I sat down late last week and nearly have a date nailed down for the race. It will be May 8th – May 17th, with the optional live 5k in East Longmeadow, MA, on May 9th! Last year’s race was our best yet! We are so looking forward to helping out our friends at The SamFund again next year! Lastly, I talk about Stefany and I making a personal commitment to training over the next 30-days. It’s not a challenge. It’s a commitment. Three days in and some parts are sticking, and others not-so-much. But we will persevere and work through it. I feel like I’m in the right frame of mind right now, as evidenced by my recent disgust over the “ON SALE” baked goods table at the grocery store. Join the Official Ordinary Marathoner team at TEAM ORDINARY! Now Open! Until the end of October, use the Promo Code LAUNCH for $10 off. Check out our homepage at www.ordinarymarathoner.com. Or join the conversation at our Ordinary Marathoners Facebook Discussion Group. I’ll also follow you back on Twitter if you follow me @OrdMarathoner. Check out our annual virtual charity race, The Ordinary Marathon. Register for 2020’s race early and be eligible for giveaways between now and race day.

Podcast #293 – Stefany Schaefer-Riecke and Aura Kennedy

As their coach, I can’t take all the credit. Just most of it! Ok, maybe they did a little work, too. Both Stefany Schaefer-Riecke and Aura Kennedy went out in the driving rain and finished the 2019 Marine Corps Marathon! For Stefany, this was her third marathon finish. For Aura, her first! After signing up for marathons 3 prior times but never even starting, Aura finally succeeded. It was a great day for both women, as they both overcame overwhelming challenges to get to the finish line. They also met a lot of other Team Ordinary members down in Washington, DC! This year’s MCM was the start of something great – for Aura and Stefany, and for Team Ordinary. We spent some time one evening with a bottle of wine (and Jorah, the cat) discussing the race. Join the Official Ordinary Marathoner team at TEAM ORDINARY! Now Open! Until the end of October, use the Promo Code LAUNCH for $10 off. Check out our homepage at www.ordinarymarathoner.com. Podcast #292 – 2019 NYC Marathon

The 2019 NYC Marathon was a great event! We went to cheer on the 50,000+ participants in the world’s largest spectator sport. Runners made their way through the five boroughs on their way to glory. #TeamOrdinary made a significant appearance at the race as well! Georgios Zavolas, the busiest man in sports, continued his savage attack on 2019 by posting a 3:41 finish. Mary Kelly proudly earned her medal, too. As did Joe Bartlett, whose race we’ll break down a little on today’s podcast. As always, a great event! I’m certainly not upset that I missed that Jets game. I got to watch 50,000 athletes who actually care about the task at hand. A much better use of my time. Join the Official Ordinary Marathoner team at TEAM ORDINARY! Now Open! Podcast #290 – Marine Corps Marathon and Bonus Tutorial Guide on How to Avoid Nipple Chaffing

What a crazy race day this past Sunday in Washington, DC. Pouring rain made faces miserable and PR’s scarce. And while the Garmin watches may not be ringing with “New Records,” the medals come with impressive memories of perseverance and grit. Congratulations to all the #TeamOrdinary members who courageously roughed it over 26.2 miles. Of all the negative side effects from the rain – be it heavy shoes, puddles, blisters – perhaps none is as annoyingly painful as chaffed nipples. I know. I’ve been there. The rain can increase the chances of experiencing this, but with the right planning, it’s completely avoidable. So as a post race-recap bonus, I fill you in on my effective way to avoid bloody nips. Podcast #289 – MCM Weekend and Witnessing a Car Crash

Despite the title of this podcast, I expect to be celebrating with all of our #TeamOrdinary runners at Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon. We are all going to have a blast and witness some incredible achievements! The title is actual quite literal, as yesterday I witnessed a pretty bad car accident. Luckily, no one was severely injured, though one woman went to the hospital. I’m pretty sure she is going to be ok – thankfully, because the accident was not her fault. What lessons did I learn? Well… first, an appreciation for the bravery and courage of first responders – people who show up on the scene not knowing what to expect, hoping somehow they can help. And also… unfortunately, there are some pretty rotten people out there, too. People who would lie to the police to the detriment of an innocent, old woman, because it might absolve them of their own poor choices and despicable behavior. I’m betting those guys aren’t runners… just a hunch. Join the Official Ordinary Marathoner...

Podcast #288 – Our Team Intro Video, Glenn is Back, and Kidney Stone Update

It’s been a really busy week for us here as #TeamOrdinary continues to flourish. A big docket of hard-to-pronounce races this weekend. Thanks especially to Christian Lee for entering a race that’s in French! We’ve been busy this week shipping our gear packets and dealing with kidney stones! Even so, we were able to put out a great video introducing all of the members of Team Ordinary! I found some overly-dramatic music to make it extra-sappy. I think it worked! MCM is next week! We’re off to San Diego tomorrow – hope to continue my road-streak by getting a video out on Monday! Wish me luck! Join the Official Ordinary Marathoner team at TEAM ORDINARY! Now Open! Podcast #287 – A Great Day for #TeamOrdinary, MCM Update, Kidney Stones and Data Loss

What a great weekend for #TeamOrdinary! Many medal-winners and Personal Records on Sunday. This includes the very first race featuring a #TeamOrdinary athlete wearing #TeamOrdinary garb during the race. Thank you George Sevick! Unfortunately, I won’t be participating in this year’s Marine Corps Marathon. It’s sad news, but not really… the alternative is spending the day with my daughters while cheering on so many of my teammates. It’s all good. An update from last week… I’ve lost my data. All of it. Some can be recovered but many important things are lost for good. Lamenting these developments, in earlier days I may have just given up. But there’s just too much good happening here to quit now. Everything is so exciting! This little hiccup is just that… an opportunity to start over in many ways and make things more efficient. It will be a lot of work, but better in the long run. Podcast #286 – Team Ordinary is Flourishing and Why You Should Hire Me to be Your Running/Triathlon Coach

Stefany and I are overwhelmed with the incredible reception Team Ordinary has received in its first few days. The basement has turned into a shipping department and the lady at the Post Office is starting to recognize me because I walk in everyday! Wishing everyone good luck this weekend in their races! Lastly, if you’ve ever wondered whether you should hire a coach, I’ll tell you why I got into it and how I can help. I also want to thank Dan Demore, Melissa Kahn, and Scott Frasard for having such confidence in me and recommending me to their groups – OBEAST Mode, Run Heifer Run, and Furever Home Running.
