Winter Is Coming

Not to stress you out further, but cold weather is drawing nearer. We talked about this smart Vice.com article on small ways to prepare for a pandemic-affected winter (https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/4aym4q/small-ways-to-prepare-home-for-winter-pandemic; some of them are not so small, though). Also mentioned: Mug displays, outdoor preschool, and a wardrobe tip Terri shared last January (go to https://parentingroundabout.com for links).

We chat about things that have completely fallen out of our everyday routine, and hatch a plot to fool today's kids about what that ancient relic the phone booth was really used for.

Second-Listen Saturday: Our Canine Kids

We recount just a few of the many ways that caring for our pets is remarkably like caring for our kids. For example, we feel like we're not that good at it.

Roundabout Roundup: Lazy Cake Cookies, Ref-N-Write, Where the Light Gets In

On this week’s Roundabout Roundup: Catherine's taking over her daughter's baking projects with Lazy Cake Cookies [https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/dessert/cake/lazy-cake-cookies.html]. Nicole discovered a resource for academic writing called Ref-N-Write [https://www.ref-n-write.com/]. This Is Not a Drill

California's El Dorado fire (the gender-reveal one) is burning very close to Nicole's home, so she's worrying about what to take if she has to evacuate. Aside from the essentials, there are some practical items she just won't leave behind. Mentioned: Our discussion of quarantine "bug-out bags" [https://www.parentingroundaboutpodcast.com/blog/our-isolation-essentials].

Our Reasons for Rule-Breaking

A post about rules for parents of college students [https://grownandflown.com/parent-college-student-do-not-do/] put us on the defensive. We don't need your stinkin' rules! And anyway, they don't apply to us. We have our reasons. Mentioned: Our rant on the advice "do something that scares you" (no thanks) [https://www.parentingroundaboutpodcast.com/blog/scary-advice].

What We’re Watching: DWTS Season Premiere and Veronica Mars “The Rapes of Graff”

On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, Dancing with the Stars is back! But Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews aren't. We're watching for some of our favorite pros and for stars like Justina Machado (of One Day at a Time, which we enjoyed), Skai Jackson, Johnny Weir, and (surprise) Nev Schulman and Nelly. After watching Veronica Mars season 2, episode 16, we hatch a plan to pack all the characters we like into a minivan and drive it far, far away from Neptune. Next: "Plan B" (maybe this plan is our same escape-from-Neptune idea!).

Back-to-School Supplies for Moms

Recently we talked about what supports teens need as they head back to school [https://www.parentingroundaboutpodcast.com/blog/back-to-school-emotions]. But this is also a stressful time for moms, especially this year. So we talked about what we need as our kids return to class (and what we don't need, like more videos from the principal [https://www.parentingroundaboutpodcast.com/blog/dont-make-us-watch-your-video]). Mentioned: Poolside remote learning in Mexico [https://www.parents.com/syndication/four-season-punta-mita-childcare-remote-learning] and remote working in Barbados [https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/remote-working-in-barbados].

Speed-Round Sunday: Things Our Mothers Did in the Kitchen That We Never Do

We're still in awe of how they put dinner on the table night after night. But the cooking grease under the sink or the alfalfa sprouts among the glassware? Not so much.

Second-Listen Saturday: Sibling Jealousy

Forget "growing out of it." We think it might take a lifetime for kids to adjust to the fundamental unfairness of having a sibling. Mentioned: This article on little kids and jealousy [http://globalnews.ca/news/3681102/is-your-child-jealous-of-their-sibling-heres-what-parents-can-do/] and this image of inclusion [https://www.thinkinclusive.us/cool-graphic-education-boxes/].
