The Test Of Life

EWhen we are young we are constantly testing ourselves in all arenas of life... We are exploring our capabilities and consistently pushing limits to see what is possible... Then as we get older we more and more become creatures of habit and these tests of life so to speak become far less frequent... We replace innovation and creativity for the safety and security... We compromise our hard charging human spirit and default to the sure thing that we believe will allow us to eventually reach the finish line... Look, nothing great has ever been accomplished without great risks... I realize how uncomfortable putting your ball sack on the chopping block is, but unless you are willing to let it all hang out, the great impact and return upon that impact will never come to fruition... I got a buddy who has recently started and sold 3 different companies; the first one did well enough to take the earnings and fund the second one... The second one, which was the one that had the absolute most potential and was looked upon as a sure thing, completely bombed because of multiple unforeseeable outside factors and influences. Completely broke from going ALL IN on the 2nd business, my dude scraped together a few nickels and started a third company... This time he applied the lessons learned from the successes and failures of the first two companies and on this third test, he fucking aced it... We aren’t always going to get straight A’s and we may even fail a course or two, but we must keep taking the different tests of life in order to relentlessly charge forward... Oh yea, and just as Billy The Kid said in Young Guns: “We test ourselves everyday cause once you stop testing yourself you get slow and they kill you.” -EB P.S. The Test Of Life

Vital Change

ENo matter what we do in life, we as human beings have an incredible tendency to get stuck in the past and all too often default to the old way of doing things... We are comfortable with what we know and if it was previously the model for success, why wouldn’t it be the model of success going forward? Well, the answer is pretty simple... Life changes. As life changes, the world changes, people change and our demands change... With a constantly changing demand comes a commerce and economy that needs to figure out how to quickly adapt the supply chain in order to meet current demands. Although we can always learn from our past successes and failures, when we fail to evolve we become increasingly less efficient and way less effective... Ultimately, this will lead to the death of whatever we are trying to hold onto and we can only hope it doesn’t drag us down with it... Let this quarantine time be a reminder to rethink how we do everything, question the status quo and challenge ourselves to the core of our existence... Take inventory in your life and ask if there may be a simpler and more rewarding way to live your life while continuing to increase your positive impact on the world. We love the comfort, we love the safety net and all of the security that comes with it, yet if we want to remain sharp, relevant and continue to survive and thrive in this ever changing world, we must realize that although change may be uncomfortable, it is vital. -EB P.S. When it starts to hurt, do this…

EWas just listening to a book called Linchpins and author Seth Godin talked about the importance of appropriately dealing with fatigue... No matter who you are, we all are going to get worn out through the race of life at one point or another, but those who are able to best endure the inevitable fatigue that sets in will ultimately prevail to live the most efficient and effective lives... Whether it was the grind of a 162-game baseball season, an Ironman Triathlon, the Western States 100, The Let Them Play Triathlon Across America or the 24 Hour Speed Golf World Record, fatigue played a major role in the overall success, or lack thereof in each event... What I learned is that it’s not whether or not we get fatigued, it’s how we are able to respond... In baseball, we call it the dog days of August but realistically each of these events had their own dog days that I had to deal with head on... There were times when I became so overwhelmed by the physical and mental fatigue that I lit...

The cream will rise ️

EAfter the 2001 season spent going up and down between Oakland and Sacramento, I went to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic... While there, I became the first “import” player in over 20 years to win the Dominican League's Most Valuable Player award and was part of a Licey team that won the championship in an EPIC 9 game battle against arch rival Aguillas... When I returned to Spring Training with the A’s, I undoubtedly believed that not only did I deserve to make the team, but I felt I had earned an opportunity to play on a regular basis. After a slow start to the spring, I finished with a flurry, hitting 3 or 4 homers in the final week of the spring season... When manager Art Howe called me into his office, I didn’t even think getting sent down was an option and apparently neither did Art. “You have done absolutely everything you needed to do to make this team but we are sending you down... This isn’t my decision... I’m sorry. Talk to Billy.” The feeling of rage, ang...

Sissy Small Fry

EToday is my middle child Sissy Small Fry’s 10th B-Day and even though she has barely scratched the surface of life, I think we can all learn a lot from her... To say she is a contrarian would be a bit of an understatement… If we say left she is going right and if we recommend black, whatever it is surely is going to turn out white. Many of you may think this could obviously be an issue, but interestingly enough, it’s been a revelation watching as she explores boundaries and we continue to give her the liberty to do so... Yes, she dyes her hair pink and puts Punky Brewster’s fashion to shame, but the autonomy she has developed is so incredibly NEXT LEVEL that she literally can sit in her room by herself with no devices and entertain herself for hours. When she is within her domain, her security and sense of self is unparalleled and when she is not, she relentlessly tests the waters of the world by diving in head first... Most importantly, even as defiant and difficult as she can ...

GET OUT OF THE LIBRARY

EJust finished the Indiana Jones movies and yes there is a reason why he was voted the greatest movie character of all time... The entire collection was full of one liners that made us laugh and think at the same time. In the final movie of the quad set, “Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull,” there is a scene where Indiana crashes a motorcycle into the university library where he worked as a professor... As all the students looked on in complete shock, there was one kid that remained in his seat and said: “Excuse me Dr. Jones, I just had a question on Hargrove’s normative culture model...” IJ: “Read Vere Gordan Childe on diffusionism. He spent most of his life in the field...” As he hopped back onto the motorcycle, Indiana then followed up with a quote that is representative of the entire Indiana Jones character and mantra... “If you want to be an archaeologist, you gotta get out of the library.” BOOM There is a certain element of education that we are able to acquire through a tex...

The right direction…

E“Our actions may be impeded . . . but there can be no impeding our intentions or dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting.” - Marcus Aurelius We talk all the time about the importance of ACTION here in the Daily Hustle but what happens when our action is impeded? How are we supposed to continue to MOVE when we face a roadblock or run into a dead end... On the Let Them Play Triathlon Across America, we were in Fallon, Nevada and trying to make our way to Salt Lake City. Kowalski and I thought we found a shortcut but somehow ended up cycling onto a gravel road and then we were finally blocked by a barbed-wire fence with a posted “DEAD END” sign... Basically, we hit a naval base and had no choice but to navigate a new route. We continued the excursion by backtracking on the gravel road and then found a dirt road heading northeast, the direction we wanted to go, so despite the girl's objection, we...

Stop Fighting It

EWhen I was a kid I used to go down to my Aunt Janie & Uncle Chris’s house in San Diego... For years Uncle Chris never missed a surf session so naturally he would drag me out there with him and taught me how to surf. We would go to a spot called Beacons in Encinitas and as far as Uncle Chris was concerned, the bigger the better... One Christmas, I remember Uncle Chris driving his VW Bus along the coastline and getting his first look at the waves. He didn’t say anything but he didn’t have to because the expression on his face said it all as he nudged me over in the passenger seat several times... At the time, I was about 12 years old and was still a very inexperienced surfer. Not exactly sure how big the waves were that day but they were big enough to get an everyday local STOKED and have me scared to death... We fired on our wetsuits and I then followed Uncle Chris into the lineup out beyond the break. Uncle Chris was a master navigator of rough waters; otherwise I would have neve...

Reaching OUR potential

EThrough this quarantine lockdown I’ve become obsessed with continuing to move and have spent a large amount of time on the treadmill and staying active around our home... The 20 plus mile per day average has been a fun little streak to keep my mind and body preoccupied as we all have had to make adjustments to our normal routines. The result of the heavy mileage has been a consistent 40-80k step count and like always, I wanted to figure out a way to get the family involved in the fun :) I recently got a new watch so I took my old watch and put it on Colton so he could track his steps... The next day I put it on Chloe and then Cali. The first go around I simply told them to see what they could get and they all came in around the 15k range… Cali took the cake with an 18,000 step day, let the others know she was the “step count champ” and then lit a fire in the other two... It was now officially ON. Chloe immediately turned in a 26,000 step day followed by Colton knocking out 34,26...

Forrest F*ING Gump

ESince the quarantine started, as a family we began watching movies nightly... I have already written about E.T, The Back To The Future trilogy and the 11 Star Wars movies we have consumed, so why not dive into another classic. For the most part, I have stayed out of the movie selection process but the other night the kids said it was my choice for the flick, and I wasn’t going to pass up their rare moment of delegation... Of course, I tried to pick a 10 part historical documentary on the Presidents but that immediately got shut down, so I was left to figure out what movie I could choose that had some sort of historical lessons as well as the ability to entertain an 8, 9 and 11 year old... After conferring with avid Daily Hustler & LTP supporter Jesse Bromberg while slaughtering a 20-mile, 6 feet apart social distance Tahoe banger, we both decided there is only one movie that offers multiple history lessons while tugging at the minds and hearts of all generations...
