Talk Heathen 04.24 2020-06-14 with Vi La Bianca and Neil the 604 Atheist

EGood Morning Heathens, in today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Vi La Bianca is joined by the wonderful and gracious Neil the 604 Atheist. Neil hosts his own YouTube show (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOkKPs3juZb9iwFn7Z29-Lw/) and has had a plethora of fantastic guests talking about their own deconversion stories there. Check them out!Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Rachel from Australia. How do atheists respond to the “No True Scotsman fallacy” when it’s used referring to us when/if we were christians? To them, a "real christian” is possibly just someone who hasn't stopped believing. If you stop believing, you never believed in the first place. Next up, Hadisoufi from North Carolina would like to talk about how a functional “day-to-day” god could possibly exist and it works for him. Vi asks this question very pointedly: Why would you value a conception of god if you don’t necessarily believe in a true existing god?Kevin in New York is calling again, this time with a hypothesis about scriptures of the bible, Jesus’ life, and the Peter principle. However, Vi would like to refresh us all on his progress on the pineal gland, wormwood, and Ouija boards, topics from previous calls with him. Vi also wonders about how Kevin comes up with these quite out of the ordinary hypotheses and questions. They give him a choice, talk about previous topics or the slew of new ones. Given the choice, Kevin decides to talk about the Peter Principle and Jesus’ life. Next time Peter, we will want to talk about your progress and will hold you to it. No ifs, ands, or buts allowed.Michael in New York would like to discuss how DMT can “show” you the metaphysical world and can prove evidence for god. Claims it is repeatable and testable because of how the drug works and it’s mind altering properties. Neil jumps in to say it’s irrelevant due to societal imprints and hallucinations can not be truth. Ooooh, this call is fantastic.Rick in Tennessee would like to talk about the ultimate self. He describes the ultimate self being “the us that we really are, our perception/essence in being, and not what is perceived of us.” He goes on to say: “This is sooo deep it’s shallow.” and “What I am at any given moment, at the moment of being, is essentially the ultimate self.” Chad in Nebraska recently deconverted and wonders how to give up religious prayer. That’s a great question, you can absolutely continue to internally meditate and talk through things. It can continue to be helpful. Vi says it wonderfully: Deconstructing your religion can take time. Talk Heathen 04.23 2020-06-07 with Eric Murphy & Rudy Bee(ExCultBaby)_0

EHello Heathens! Today’s episode of Talk Heathen is brought to you by just stay safe out there friends. Eric Murphy is joined by a dear friend, Rudy Bee (aka: EXCultBaby) Welcome Rudy! The first caller is a returning caller, Nindo from New York. He is calling in to complain about his call and how he was perceived last week (and this week it seems.) He is refusing to recognize how his ideas and the way he provided them contributed to the way he was and is treated. Aw, poor baby. Next up, Joseph from Nevada would like to talk about atheist forums and how he is seen as a troll on these forums. He claims he enjoys challenging atheist worldviews and also claims “all atheists are evolutionists.” He then attempts to discredit the scientific method, evolution, and take the Richard Dawkins quote about aliens out of context. This quote again. Sigh. Rudy said it best: “Your personal incredulity does not invalidate centuries of scientific research.” Jesse would like to talk about answered prayer and miracles. Is there evidence for answered prayers? At what rate is it answered and can it be testable for evidence? Does it matter what or who one is praying to? Oh, it only works for Christians? Oof. Ray is wondering if atheists and Christians can find common ground. I would love it if that were to happen, but I’d also love it if Christians didn’t use their personal beliefs to infringe on others’ rights. Will in California would like to talk about the Unmoved Mover cosmological argument and Thomas Aquinas. There can't be an infinite regress: therefore God. Um, no. Here we go with the long-winded philosophy.Toni is calling in talking about rough times and how to get through them once you leave faith. Seek out support groups, make friends, go to conferences, find your community online, and if you can’t find a community, start one! Iif you have the time, volunteer for Recovering from Religion’s hotline project. You are not alone. https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org & https://www.seculartherapy.org/Andy is wondering how you can falsify nonbelief. What? Is there any basis or legitimacy to belief or nonbelief? It sounds like he is trying to falsify a negative and I’m not sure if that’s how it works. The conversation moves on to solipsism. BOY!Kaitlyn is calling in about her journey and struggle getting out of religion. She is so close and Rudy recommends she read the bible without any preconceived notions and see how it really is. Kaitlyn, it takes time, you will stumble a bit and relearn some things, but it’s a journey. Best of luck to you!And that’s our show today folks!

Talk Heathen 04.22 2020-05-31 with Eric MurphyVi La Bianca

EGreetings all you Heathens! Today’s Talk Heathen is brought to you by, keep wearing masks and wash your damned hands. We are hosted today by Eric Murphy and Vi La Bianca, or as I like to call them, the dynamic duo. Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Nindo from New York. He would like to discuss the possibility of a designer god. Sorry Eric, not a designer like Chanel or Louis Vuitton. But this call has all the fallacies: Appeals from authority, fine tuning, and solipsism oh my!Next up, Joe from New York would like to talk about how he had been treated poorly by the atheist community online either in the comments for the shows (ooooof!) or by other internet show hosts. The call evolves into him asking about free will and also turns to the ‘no true Scotsman’ fallacy. Father John from Canada is up next, he is an Eastern Orthodox Catholic and is calling in without a topic. Eric is excited and has a lot of questions about it. Starting with communal spoons in the time of COVID. “The transmission of COVID cannot happen in church…” Yikes, Father John affirmed that it can’t through the taking of communion and says it is against the faith to test the veracity of this claim. The next caller in the queue is Caleb from Pennsylvania wanting to discuss what a good and healthy faith community looks like to atheists. As long as you don’t infringe upon others’ rights and are motivated by positive and not requiring folks to be manipulated into getting help or have prerequisite or conditional entry. Thanks for tuning in and thank you to our essential workers, we are here for you. Please be safe and healthy out there, we as a community are better because you are in it. See you all next week.

Talk Heathen 04.21 2020-05-24 with Eric MurphyVi La Bianca

EGreetings Heathens! In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, the dynamic duo are back together again, Eric Murphy and Vi La Bianca. Like a breath of fresh air, they bring to you another wonderful episode. Let’s do this!Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Joe from Kansas. Joe is currently in a period of transition from theist to atheist, and has some lingering questions about belief in hell. Vi and Eric provide some gold standard advice in getting through this. Tom in the UK is next, calling about how he as a theist can’t understand that life as we know it is the result of something random. Sounds like the watchmaker fallacy… Hmm.Minh is calling once again, this time asking if we are ok with religion being viewed in a holistic way. Vi asks: Are there pragmatic reasons for being religious, like if it’s a good thing for one’s mental health and well being? Ooooh, Rykis is calling in after being reincarnated a few times and says his soul is 3,000 years old. Also claims to be an indigo child, a past time traveler, and is here to change the world. This one is interesting. Ends the call wanting to promote his book, NOPE! Weee!Next up, Dave in Toronto has an argument he’d like to share. He claims that using our overused and possibly bad linguistic habits can attribute agency and characteristics to current definitions. Basically redefining words such as saying the old word of nature is god. It’s an interesting concept, but not really utilized in the traditional sense of god. It doesn’t really compute. And I just wrote some word salad.Marisa is needing advice about how she has been having an argument with their therapist about her deconversion. Her therapist is continually saying their deconversion is a choice. This bias (from a possible Christian worldview) could be clouding their counseling. This seems to me to be a red flag, I’d move onto a different therapist if possible. Definitely reach out to RFR and find a new therapist who will actually listen to you: https://www.recoveringfromreligion.orgAndrew is calling in, claims to stir up trouble in the churches he has attended. Likes to talk to atheists about science and factual events in the bible. He is looking to start a movement, is on a “monotheistic high,” and wants to unite people. He is all over the place and it’s tough to follow, but he is entertaining. Our last caller of the day, Nick asks where do we draw the line at bad thoughts and protecting people from religion? Eric responds: “People are different from their beliefs, respect the person, dismantle or challenge the idea.” Thanks for tuning in folks, please be safe and healthy. We need you around! See you all next week!

Talk Heathen 04.20 2020-05-17 with Vi La Bianca & Anthony Magnabosco

EGreetings Heathens! In today’s episode of Talk Heathen, Vi La Bianca is joined by Anthony Magnabosco. Welcome Anthony! It’s great to have you with us today. You can find Anthony on his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/magnabosco210/Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Nicholas. His wife recently passed and is wondering how to keep the memory of his wife alive for their daughter. He is also trying to figure out how best to mourn her passing and what is acceptable for him and his daughter. We are so sorry Nicholas, please definitely reach out to the Secular Therapy Project and Grief Beyond Belief if you need help https://www.seculartherapy.org/ and http://griefbeyondbelief.org/Next up, Shawn from Minnesota would like to talk about how religion is a social construct and what is wrong with understanding that? He goes on to talk about instead of battling for his position, he’d like to approach it more of a reasonable and rational person would. That can be helpful, but I’d also ask this: Why are you getting value out of this belief rather than other places. The following caller Kevin from New York wants to claim that the pineal gland in the brain proves a soul. For those interested, from Wikipedia, the pineal gland produces melatonin, a serotonin-derived hormone which modulates sleep patterns in both circadian and seasonal cycles. Vi asks the all important question, where is the evidence the pineal gland also produces a soul? And how do eyes play a part in this proof? HUH? I got lost completely. The next caller in the queue is Adrian in Texas wanting to discuss how science proves a designer God and lists off a couple scientific facts and discoveries that prove this, except they don’t. He includes in this list, the axial tilt of the Earth, the Moon, and evidence of design all around us. Oh boy.Next up, Clear as Crystal is a theist after being an atheist for a time. Claims that they have trouble with evolution and humans just can’t seem to get it together without a looming and helicopter parent/God. Evolution without God isn’t good enough for me, so there must have been an authority figure of some sort. She also had a tough time and claims it was God that got her through it. Actually, Crystal, that was you getting through it and you are stronger than you give yourself credit for. That’s the episode for today! Stay safe and healthy folks! See you next week!

Talk Heathen 04.19 2020-05-10 with Eric Murphy & Dragnauct Sylvas

EGreetings Heathens and happy mom’s day to all those mothers out there. Today Eric Murphy is joined by our dear friend Dragnauct Sylvas! Welcome back Drag, it’s good to see you!Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Gullapalli from Illinois. He is curious about whether or not the idea of a God is important. The conversation evolves whether religion is motivated by money and the economy. He then begins to argue for the usefulness of religion. Next up, Paster Cole from North Carolina would like to talk about a previous episdode’s call about abortion and how he has problems with the idea that we should defer the conversation about abortion to folks with uteruses. Ooooof, this is a horrible call to make on Mother’s Day, I definitely think that was on purpose and definitely tone deaf. This is a live one folks, listen in for the rambling and a lot of gish gallops from Cole. The following caller named Ellen from Michigan has some questions about human evolution and blood types for Drag. I understand some of the science explained, and this is fascinating. Tune in for some quick science talk! The next caller in the queue is Adam from Florida who is wondering how to approach his wife’s more fervent belief after reading the Bible. He isn’t sure how to proceed. We definitely think going to couples’ counseling would be helpful in your situation.Next up, Kathy in Pennsylvania would like to talk about sins, the afterlife, and punishment for those sins committed in this life. Her connection wasn’t great, hopefully she calls back!Afterwards we have David from Israel. He would like to talk about the tri-omni Abrahamic God and how it’s preposterous. He sounds angry and possibly trying to look at this logically and rationally, maybe he needs a cookie.Kathy in Pennsylvania would like to discuss hellfire and damnation for finite sins during this life. Anxiety, fear, and rumination of this also isn’t fair to the life you’re living now. Kathy would benefit from reaching out to folks at Secular Therapy Project: https://www.seculartherapy.org/ and the Recovering from Religion: https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/ to deal with her religious trauma. Our last caller of the day, Jesse in New Jersey has a question for Drag. He is wondering if the Ashkenazi Jews became a genetic trait or disposition for the Jewish faith due to their isolation and location. It’s an interesting topic, and Drag explains the science debunking it really well! That’s the show today folks, please continue being safe, healthy, and we’ll see you all next time. Love to you all!

Talk Heathen 04.18 2020-05-03 with Eric Murphy & Dave Warnock

EGreetings Heathens! We hope you are doing well while still in lock-down, today we have a dear friend on the show, Dave Warnock! He has truly inspired a great number of us, including me, the show writer/archivist. We love Dave and we are so glad to have him on the show again today!Let’s get to calls. The first one is a returning caller, Corey from South Carolina. He called in last week talking about how prayer works and is evidence of God and returns this week to ask a poignant question about how to live together (Atheists and Theists) in harmony. (He also lets us know that he is doing some research on his call from last week. Great job Corey!)Next up, Michael from Florida would like to talk about how he is questioning his faith as a Seventh Day Adventist. He goes on to ask what the Atheist view on prophecy is. Eric responds: “If we look at prophecy after the fact, how do we know it wasn’t just made up?” Kevin has called us back and he has more proof of demons! He is saying an ancient text convinced him that demons absolutely exist. Kevin goes on to say that our times show that demons exist, it’s a cop out though and externalizes the blame that should be on us. We are responsible for our own behavior and we should be held accountable for it.After Kevin, we have Adrian. He believes in a designer God because of evidence that was left behind. Evidence is a singular point of data that proves one thing vs. another. So PROVE IT Adrian! Bring your best evidence to the table, he also does try to prove the hollow moon hypothesis. Spoiler alert, he doesn’t prove anything. This is a crazy call… the goalposts keep moving, I’m getting dizzy. Our last caller of the show, Paige in Indiana is wondering if having belief is ok if you receive positive reinforcement from said belief. They are a scientologist and claims they have gotten positive benefit from these beliefs. Dave responds “Me thinking it’s true and beneficial, doesn’t make it true, and beliefs can potentially become devastating.” Wow, this one is interesting.Stay safe, stay healthy and we’ll see you next time heathens!
