In some cases, this is the result of postpartum depression, as when Andrea Yates drowned her five children. Other situations occur as the result of divorces, such as the case of Debra Jeter, who murdered one daughter, and attempted to murder the other, to punish their father, and because she was despondent over the pending divorce. Still other cases of parricide occur because the mother views the children as a hindrance, such as the case of Susan Smith. But before Susan Smith, there was Diane Downs, who coldly shot her three children, without shedding tears.
